After high school, most Swedish students choose to take some time off, work or travel, and figure out their interests before starting university。At the university stage, they will receive about 2500 krona per month from the government, plus their own student loans, there will be about 8000 krona per month, even in Stockholm, it is enough to maintain a good standard of living, so Swedish students are financially independent after high school。During the summer vacation, many company employees will take time off, so students have the chance to earn some money by taking summer jobs。
Q: Tell me about your summer job?
Shirin:I used to take summer jobs in Lund, but this is my first time in Stockholm。I work for an insurance company whose main business is auto insurance。My specific job is to analyze customer information to see what the general claim plan should be。Most of the time, I also have to do customer service, which is to answer the phone and answer customer questions。
Magnus:I work for the Swedish Post Office through an agency with no set hours。If they needed someone, they would let me know around 9 am, and my working hours were from 5 PM to 10 PM that day。I do simple manual labor, unloading mail items from the conveyor belt and loading them onto the car. Sometimes it is tiring, but it is also exercise。
Sarah:I've had this job since high school, at a nursing home near my home。It is mainly responsible for the daily life of the elderly people in the nursing home, giving them medicine regularly, helping them to go out and do activities, and sometimes contacting their families。Since the nursing home is staffed 24 hours a day, we also work shifts, often overnight。
Q: Do you like the job?
Shirin:I love it!The company environment is very good, and the colleagues are very friendly。Since I'm a law major, insurance companies have a lot of provisions that I can understand more quickly, and putting this job on my resume will be very helpful in future job hunting。
Magnus:All right? Just making a little money。But it's a no-brainer. It's a simple move。But the working hours are not very comfortable, such as the European Cup a while ago I can only listen to the radio。
Sarah:It is OK, because I have been doing this job, and I am familiar with my colleagues there。I like old people. They can be cute sometimes, but they can be a lot of trouble sometimes, just like kids。The night shift was painful, and sometimes it was challenging to change and clean their soiled clothes。
Q: How does summer work pay? What are you going to do with the money?
Shirin:The company pays by the hour, about 120 kronor an hour after tax。This is so much better than my old job, and it's nine to five。I'm going to Argentina this August to learn Spanish, and the money I earn will be used for my trip to South America。
Magnus:They pay by the hour, tax 100 kroner an hour, overtime after 6:00 p.m。I have no plan, is the summer to earn more money, next semester can live a lot of moisture。
Sarah:We don't get paid very much, just over 90 kroner an hour。But it would be a lot more if we worked the night shift。The money is mainly used to pay rent, but hopefully there is some left over for travel。
